Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus

2 min read

Here we are going to talk about Conditions which affect the Big Toe. If you have flat feet you can strike the ground very hard especially in the Big Toe area. The Big Toe should have several mm’s of upwards and downwards movement (dorsal and plantar flexion) but when you have Flat Feet the downward movement can be compromised greatly. When downward movement of the Big Toe stops this, can lead to Hallux Limitus (Limited movement of the Big Toe) which in turn can lead to Hallux Rigidus (Restricted movement of the Big Toe).

Both of these conditions can be very painful and the most effective (non-surgical) treatment is to use an Orthotic with special Wedges which support the Big Toe and limits painful movement.

If you suffer from either of these conditions you should pop into your nearest Foot Solutions store, and after the Free foot assessment, you can be fitted with either Customised Arch Supports or with our new Bauerfeind Redux Hallux arch supports. We have had several customers lately who suffer from Hallux Limitus or Hallux Rigidus and after being fitted with the Bauerfeind Redux Hallux they have reported instant relief from pain.

Other painful conditions can also develop on top of the Hallux Joint (Big Toe Joint) ie Exostosis (formation of new bone on the surface of a bone, in this case on top of the Big Toe Joint) so in order to prevent this happening it is important to wear an orthotic with the special wedges as described above.

Breaking down of the Fatty Pads under the Big Toe joint is also a result of Hallux Limitus or Hallux Rigidus, so if this happens you may also need to have extra cushioning added to your Customised Arch Supports – again talk to your Associate in Foot Solutions!

Because the foot is flat it is recommended that anybody suffering from either of these Big Toe conditions wear a good quality Arch Support because when the arch is supported correctly this also takes pressure off the Big Toe. So don’t hesitate – call into Foot Solutions today and experience pain relief sooner rather than later!
