What is a Bunion?

BunionRev2A Bunion is a bony protrusion of the big toe joint that can cause friction and pain when wearing shoes. It is a common foot problem, mainly affecting the female population due to improper footwear. If your big toe looks distorted and protrudes from the side of your foot, this might be the symptom of a bunion

Other symptoms include:

  • Inflammation of the affected toe joint and surround area
  • Swollen feet and toe joint area
  • Soreness on the side surface of the big toe
  • Discomfort or pain when walking

With the continued movement of the big toe towards the smaller toes, a bunion can result in the big toe resting under or over the second toe. This placement causes a common forefoot condition called overlapping toes.

Another type of bunion some individuals experience is known as a Tailor’s Bunion or a Bunionette. The Bunionette forms on the outside of the foot towards the joint at the little toe. It is a smaller bump that forms due to the little toe moving inwards towards the big toe.

The causes

Bunions are a common problem experienced mostly by women. They can develop from an abnormality in foot function or arthritis, but are more commonly caused by improper fitting footwear. Tight, narrow dress shoes with a constrictive toe box (toe area) can cause the foot to begin to take the shape of the shoe, leading to the formation of a bunion. In fact dress shoes and boots which are tapered in the toe area can cause the bunion to worsen to the point where surgery is necessary.

Treatment and Prevention with Foot Solutions®

The best way to alleviate the pain associated with bunions is to wear properly fitting shoes. Shoes with a high and wide toe box (toe area) are recommended for people suffering from forefoot disorders  such as bunions. Shoes with rocker soles will unload pressure at the bunion area. Inserts are also recommended for this condition to provide extra comfort, support, and protection.

Foot Solutions® sells only the most comfortable shoes, designed to help you walk properly and in more comfort. If you are suffering from bunions, have a look at our selection of comfort shoes for men and women. We carry shoes with Stretchable Leather to relieve pressure on the affected area.

In the early stages of the formation of a bunion, soaking feet in warm water can provide temporary relief. Other conservative (non-surgical) treatments include:

  • Bunion Shields
  • Bunion Night Splints

These treatments can limit the progression of the bunion formation, relieve pain and provide a healthy environment for the foot. Our qualified staff would be delighted to advise you on these products.
