What is Over-Pronation (Flat Feet)?
Over-pronation, or flat feet, occurs in the walking process when a person’s arch collapses upon weight bearing. This motion can cause extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, possibly causing severe discomfort and leading to other foot problems. Bear in mind that people with flat feet often do not experience discomfort immediately, and some never suffer from any discomfort at all.
Over-pronation can often lead to conditions such as:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel Spurs
- Post-tib Tendonitis
You will find further details of these conditions on our Foot Problems Page.
There are many causes of flat feet.
- Obesity, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on a hard surface can weaken the arch, leading to over-pronation
- Weakened muscles due to aging or heavy strain placed on the feet
- Standing or walking for long periods in high heels
- Wearing shoes that don’t provide proper arch support may be a contributing factor.
Treatment and Prevention at Foot Solutions®
It is vital to wear the correct shoes. If you have over-pronation, your shoes should offer great support and stability through the arch. Insoles and Custom Arch Supports are two of the tools we recommend to aid arch support. Inserts should be designed with medial rear-foot posting to prevent over-pronation. Footwear with a firm heel counter is often recommended for extra support and stability.
Our trained specialists will be delighted to advise on the best products and treatment for your condition. Make an appointment in your nearest Foot Solutions® store and we will also carry out fitting and digital foot analysis free of charge.
