Plantar Fasciitis: Is Sitting At Your Desk Hurting Your Feet?

2 min read

Here at Foot Solutions, we see a lot of customers with plantar fasciitis, a painful condition that occurs when the ligament that joins the heel to the toes becomes torn or inflamed. Plantar fasciitis is common amongst runners, but it can also affect people who spend a lot of time sitting at their desks, often causing pain on standing up.

There are many ways to treat plantar fasciitis and relieve the pain so that you can recover from the condition, and rest is often an important part of the cure. However, there are several stretches that you can do while you are sitting at your desk to help prevent pain in your feet when you stand.

Stretches You Can Do At Your Desk:

· Bottle/ball rolling. Exercising the plantar fascia can be as easy as rolling a small ball or water bottle back and forwards under your foot. A frozen or chilled bottle of water is ideal as the ice helps to reduce swelling and inflammation in the foot.

· Sitting stretch. When your feet are hidden under the desk, you can practice this exercise throughout the day without anyone even noticing! Cross your right leg over the left and gently pull back on the toes with your left hand for a few seconds, and then repeat on the opposite side.

· Standing stretch. You’ll have to get up from your desk to do this one, but repeating it at intervals throughout the day is likely to ensure that the process of standing up is much easier! Simply remove your shoes and press your toes against the wall, keeping your heel on the floor. Press your toes into the wall and lean into the stretch gently so that you feel the plantar fascia stretching out.

Of course, the most important way to protect your feet against plantar fasciitis and relieve foot pain is to ensure that your feet are properly supported and cushioned by your footwear. Shoes that fit your feet correctly will feel much better on your feet, and you may find that custom inserts are helpful to change the way your weight is distributed within your shoes.
